Sebastián Zárate

Dr. Zarate is an Assistant Professor of Communication at the Universidad de los Andes, Chile, which he joined in 2018. He teaches Media law and Mass Communication Theory at the undergraduate and doctoral programs (Facultad de Comunicación).

Zarate is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mass Communication at the College of Journalism and Communications of the University of Florida (United States). He started the program motivated for focusing my career in a Journalism Department after I eight years of teaching Constitutional and Media Law at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile School of Law.

He earned a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Bristol (England) with the thesis titled “A Socio-Legal response to the constitutional problems of independent regulators in the UK and Spain.” He also holds a research degree (DEA) from the University of Salamanca (Spain) and a Master degree in law from the Universidad Catolica de Chile.

Before the Universidad de los Andes, he spent eight years as an Assistant Professor of Law at the Universidad Catolica de Chile Law School, teaching full-time undergraduate (at the School of Law and the School of Communications), and postgraduate (Master and Ph.D. programs). Besides my academic work, he has been the Secretary General (General Counsel) of the Chilean Association of Newspapers (Asociación Nacional de la Prensa, ANP), as well as the Legal Officer (Fiscal) at the Media Ethics Committee (Consejo de Ética de los Medios de Comunicación, a self-regulatory body of all media in Chile).
